Design Case Study 4 - rebuild your kitchen

The Problem
This client had an extremely small kitchen space to work with. They not only wanted a better kitchen configuration, they really wanted to make it something special. The kitchen cabinets were a danger to her husband, who kept hitting his head on them and they needed split level counter tops that would work for each of their different heights (6'2" and 5'2"). Besides wanting the kitchen to be as unique and beautiful as the craftsman house they wanted it to suit the time period.

The Solution
Chasworth Place space planned a brand new kitchen, moved the water heater outside and provided room for a pantry that had previously been missing. By removing the center divider we extended the counter some more and added a peninsula. The area near the stove is about 4" lower than regular cabinet height, making it easier for the wife to cook. Using light paint on the walls allows items like the finish on the cabinets to enhance the ambiance of the room. The backsplash had to remain simple because of the size but we incorporated small 2 x 2 tiles that have craftsman motif of a dragonfly and some geometric tiles that appealed to her mathematician husband. We selected tile counter tops rather than granite as it was more in keeping with the period of the house. The final touch was a 100 year old antique barbershop cabinet that I found to use instead of built in cabinets. While built ins would have overwhelmed the space, the antique suited the house and the space perfectly. It was unexpected and unique.

The Results

  • The clients were extremely happy with their new kitchen and love spending time in it together cooking and showing it off to their guests.
  • While it's a small kitchen by clearing out the space we were able to make it appear much larger than it actually is. Every bit of space is used perfectly.
  • The kitchen is open, welcoming and beautiful.
