Design Case Study 5 - best use of small space

The Problem
The client is an artist, which accounts for his unique taste in art and furniture, and wanted something very unique and creative to match his personality and style. He was looking for his home to inspire him as well as to feel that it was a retreat every day that would allow for his mind to be as creative as possible. Despite the excitement and inspiration of the space, as an artist, the client also needs his home to be calm as well.

The Solution
A small space is difficult to work with.  Many people will tell you to make it all the same color and it will appear bigger but that's not always true. The key is to make proper use of it and define each area as its own. This space has tons of windows and wonderful views. There is a plethora of color outside, which we wanted to bring inside as well while still maintaining a calm environment. By selecting orange for creativity and an inspiring, yet calming blue, we were able to liven up the space and create an incredibly inspirational environment while still developing a sense of peace. This sense of peace was heightened as well by a mixture of natural elements. This client had some very unique pieces already in their collection, which we simply added some complementary artwork to.  You walk in this room and you feel like you have stepped away from the rest of the world and have entered your own private island getaway. The views look over the valley and you feel very far away from rush of everyday life.

The Results

  • By adding color we were able to create a unique space where the client felt completely at home and comfortable. It is both inspiring and calming.
  • The small ledge off the kitchen made it possible to use the small space for eating rather than simply as an area to pass through.
  • By using different shades of color we were able to define different areas and create a sense of more room.
  • We were able to keep the client's personality strongly in the space, despite the size.
