Design Case Study 7

The Problem
This client had eclectic and rustic taste when I met her. Having just returned from a trip to India, she had fallen in love with the style there and came home wanting to incorporate this into her bedroom, which she felt was too masculine for her, even though she loved all of the pieces in the room.

The Solution
We started off by looking for soft furnishings that would bring out the vibrancy of the room. By choosing burgundy silk, we brought out the wood tones in the bed. Indian style is very vibrant, so we wanted to incorporate that concept and found an embroidered yellow sheer for the bedspread, which gave it a rich ethnic look. We also found a crinkled fabric that added texture around the edges and mirrored the raw wood in the headboard.  We had pillows made using a mixture of the three fabrics and added tassel trims to the front pillow.

The canopy pays homage to the mosquito netting used throughout. While useful, it also implies romance. Once again we used layers and tassels to create a rich, textured look – exactly what the client wanted.

With the dramatic bed, the off white walls had to change. We found the "burnt rose" paint for the walls and accentuated it with a dark ceiling. The dark ceiling not only brought up the color of the room and accentuated the curve of the ceiling, it also allowed her husband to feel that the room was not overly feminine.

The Results

  • By incorporating a dark ceiling, rich fabric and keeping the rustic bed, we were able to create a bedroom which was a great mix of masculine and feminine style.
  • The careful mixture of eclectic styles allows for each style to be enjoyed and not struggle with each other for attention.
  • The clients have a romantic, rich and vibrant bedroom that fits both of their personalities.
