The Problem
The client loves Spanish and Asian pieces and wanted to find a way to blend those two disparate cultures into one unified look without jarring her guests. She also had some gorgeous modern furniture placed throughout the home which made for lovely 'bones'. However, the whole house was white, cold and fairly unfriendly. The owner wanted something bolder, warm and inviting, but wanted help going from white to color.
The Solution
The living room is large and the clients love to entertain there. It actually has two focal points with the fireplace being one and the window, with their terrific views, being the other. We knew the room would be used a lot for entertaining and the client fell in love with the semi-circular sofa, which made a great shape for engaging with guests and filled the space nicely without crowding it. We selected a neutral fabric so it would blend with the rest of the styles in the room and not overshadow anything else. We found a beautiful antique Asian chest that balances out the fireplace and also has a lot of texture just like the sofa. The coffee table had to be round to reflect the curve of the sofa and we selected wicker, which compliments the Asian chest, while the wood pulls in the dramatic wood molding around the room. The wall colors are a soft yellow that enhances the wood trim and keeps an open feeling throughout the space.
The client loves modern art and yet it had to work with the more rustic styles, which she also appreciated. When we found the beautiful wall pieces, it was an obvious perfect fit. The layers of the paintings work well, the colors are rich, the ragged edges match the antique pieces and it was also a punch of color on the wall that the client was looking for, without being overwhelming.
The Results
- The clients are thrilled with the look, it encompasses the many aspects of who they are in one unified space.
- They have used it for many parties and find it's a great way for everyone to sit together and talk.
- Because the room is a reflection of the hosts, everyone feels comfortable there and enjoys the space as well.
